Weights and Facts about the 1923 Silver dollar

How the Peace silver dollar began

The United States Silver dollars issued from 1921 to 1935 were originally planned as a commemorative coins to celebrate the ending of World War one.  Since then, the coin's design has earned the silverdollar nickname of "PEACE DOLLARS".

These silver dollars were authorized by way of the Pittman Act, as an attempt to help the silver mining western states dispose of their newly mined silver bullion.  An unusual fact is that these silver $ coins did not undergo the normal Congressional sanction required for changes in American coinage.

1st Year of Issue Becomes scarce

The Morgan style US silver dollar ceased production in late 1921.  Near the end of the year the US mint began minting the Peace Dollar. Because most of the year was past, only about 1 million 1921 Peace dollars were minted, making 1921 a scarcer year for "peace" style silver dollars.

Silver dollars made from 1921 to 1935 weight 26.73 grams.  They are made of 90% silver and 10% copper. This means that if the silver were extracted from an uncirculated coin the total amount of pure silver a 1923 silver dollar contains would be about 77.34 % of a troy ounce. Other United States silver dollars minted from 1878 to 1935 also contain the same amount of silver.
